Are You Feeling Stuck In Your Professional Life?

Someone recently asked me what clients I think I best work with in coaching – and what kinds of issues or people interest me most. The short answer is that my clients are very different, but they can also be very similar in what they are seeking professionally.

As a coach, I have worked with CEOs and presidents of businesses; medical doctors; law firm partners, counsels, and associates; in-house attorneys; compliance officers; consultants; accountants; business developers; entrepreneurs; real estate professionals; public relations experts; lobbyists; healthcare leaders; and even other coaches. I have also worked with these types of professionals and others as a lawyer and business advisor.

These people are wildly different not only in their work, but at the levels and stages of their careers. They have varied backgrounds, paths and industries; diversities of experience and perspectives; and a myriad of ways in which they approach the world.

But what the same about them? In short – almost all of them are feeling stuck in some way in their professional lives.

Feeling stuck can mean different things to different people. For example:

  • Being unsure what you want as a next professional step – e.g. staying on the same path at your current organization, seeking promotion to a different opportunity in that firm, or looking for something elsewhere.

  • Having trouble getting motivated and staying accountable to make a change that you know you want to make but you just can’t get started on, such as refining your professional brand, working to bring in more business, or revising your resume and preparing for job interviews.

  • Thinking that how you are approaching a challenge in your professional life isn’t working but you don’t know what would work better – perhaps with regard to a tough relationship with your boss, difficulties working with a new team, or adjusting to a change in company culture.

  • Knowing where you want to go professionally, but unclear on how to get there and what resources you might access to help you develop a strategic plan and goals.

What is holding someone back varies from person to person. You might be wary of uncertainty, feel alone in your dilemma, be tired and discouraged, or just unsure of what is most important to you in moving forward. But sensing that you are stuck is a common thread for almost all professionals at some point in their careers.  No matter the level of seniority, area of work, or industry sector, everyone at some point recognizes that they are having a difficult time.

Realizing that you want to make a change in how you respond to that challenge is the first step for someone interested in coaching. For me as a coach, working with people that decide to find a way to make that change and get un-stuck is a frequent theme in my engagements. The real reward in that work, however, is learning my client’s unique situation, concerns, and priorities so that we can progress together to meet their individual, distinct goals.
